LOL to Holiness: Embracing Humor on the Spiritual Path

In our pursuit of holiness and personal growth, we often focus on serious matters, contemplating our imperfections and striving for virtue. However, we must not overlook the importance of humor in this journey. Humor, with its ability to bring joy, cultivate humility, and foster connections, plays a vital role in helping us embrace holiness more fully. Let us explore how humor can lead us towards a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationship with God.

Humor Leads to Joy and Wonderment

Humor possesses a unique creative power that can awaken joy within us. When we encounter something funny, it has the ability to brighten our spirits and lift our hearts. Laughter releases endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones, and creates a positive mindset. Through humor, we are reminded to approach life with a sense of lightness, finding joy in the small and unexpected moments. In cultivating a spirit of wonderment, humor helps us recognize the beauty and awe in God's creation.

Laughter Can Shield You Against Pride

Humor and humility go hand in hand, acting as a shield against pride. The ability to laugh at ourselves acknowledges our imperfections and reminds us that we are not infallible. In the Christian tradition, we can draw inspiration from the life of Saint Philip Neri, who used humor to bring people closer to God. G.K. Chesterton aptly stated, "Humor can get in under the door while seriousness is still fumbling at the handle." By incorporating humor into our lives, we cultivate humility, opening doors to deeper connections with others and with God.

G.K. Chesterton wrote, "It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it." This quote emphasizes that the Catholic faith, as a religion, has withstood the test of time because it allows for humor and laughter. The ability to find humor within our faith strengthens our relationship with God and helps us avoid becoming overly severe or rigid in our practices.

Fatherhood and Finding Fun

Fatherhood is a sacred vocation, one that carries immense responsibilities. However, it is essential for fathers to also embrace the lighthearted aspects of their role. Humor allows fathers to connect more closely with their children, fostering a sense of relatability and warmth. Even in the divine realm, we see the playfulness of God the Father. Consider the creation of the platypus—an unusual and whimsical creature. It reveals that even in His creative process, God had a sense of humor. Embracing humor in fatherhood brings us closer to emulating the qualities of our heavenly Father.

The Catholic Church itself acknowledges the importance of humor. Saint Teresa of Avila once prayed, "From silly devotions and sour-faced saints, good Lord, deliver us." This plea highlights the need for balance, reminding us that our faith should not be devoid of joy and laughter. St. Ignatius also recognized the power of laughter, stating, "Laugh and grow strong." Holy laughter, when rooted in faith, becomes a healing balm, strengthening us against the sin of pride.

Humor, with its ability to bring joy, cultivate humility, and foster connections, is a powerful tool in our pursuit of holiness. Through laughter, we open ourselves to joy and wonderment, appreciating the beauty and awe of God's creation. Humor also serves as a shield against pride, reminding us of our imperfections and fostering humility. Furthermore, humor in fatherhood deepens the bond between fathers and their children, reflecting the playful nature of God the Father. The Catholic Church's ability to embrace humor and laughter is a testament to its resilience and guidance by the Holy Spirit. Let us embrace humor in our spiritual journey, allowing it to guide us towards a holiness that encompasses joy, humility, and a deeper connection with God and others.
